Driver documents in Thailand

For rental and lawful driving, carry the original national driving licence for the correct category together with a valid International Driving Permit issued by an authorised body, or a Thai driving licence. The applicable IDP format depends on the issuing country and the 1949 Geneva or 1968 Vienna Convention. An IDP is not valid without the national licence. Confirm the required documents with the rental company and insurer before travelling: handing over a vehicle does not by itself confirm that the driver is legally entitled to drive.

Drive on the left and normally overtake on the right. Do not assume every left turn on red is permitted. Motorcycles filter between lanes, while songthaews and taxis may stop suddenly—leave space and check mirrors. Use the horn to warn of danger, not to hurry others. Never drive after alcohol or impairing medication.
